Ralph Witter's Elementary School held a special flag ceremony for two families whose fathers were deployed overseas in the Middle East. The event idea was sparked by RWE's secretary Connie Dickinson, who received a package from a former student. Army National Guard Specialist Brad Becerra sent the package that contained an American flag along with a letter and two certificates from Afghanistan. This special flag flew over their base in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Dickinson thought about how to make this gift special for the school and its two deployed families. So for this ceremony they included the other family of Sergeant First Class Benjamin Postma who also has children at RWE and honor them.
The families honored at the flag ceremony are for Specialist Brad Becerra, his wife Rachel Hughes, their children Reagan Severance and Carter Hughes-Becerra and Sergeant First Class Benjamin Postma, his wife Hannah and children Kinley, Blakeley and Trenton.
SFC Postma is currently stationed in Syria. He serves on a four-man team operating a Radar Truck. Specialist Becerra is a 94 PAPA Rocket Systems Repair team member and is part of the US Active Army National Guard deployed in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Hannah Postma said that receiving this honor is "so meaningful because we get a lot of our support, you know, with Ben being gone, we get all of our support from this school and my kid's teachers. And they see them every day and they encourage them and keep us uplifted. So it means a lot that they would put on a ceremony like this."
Rachel Hughes said on be honored by the school, "It was unexpected. We were surprised they were doing it and it was nice. We appreciate that they acknowledge that they have families who are in the military."
Dickinson and the school wanted to make it special for their families through this flag ceremony. They recorded it and plan to send it to their military people deployed. They thought it would be a good way to bring attention to the American flag, our country and the service people.
