Wrestlers face Greybull Friday at home

Bobcat wrestlers made an early morning trip to Greybull Saturday to compete in their one day tourney with 12 other teams including the returning 2A state champion Moorcroft Wolves. Still missing Remington Ferree from the lineup, and losing Cole Christenson to possible injury during the tournament, put the Bobcats at a disadvantage. The ended the tournament with 91 points taking sixth place

Logan Cole, #1 rated in 2A at 220, nipped #2 rated Parker Schlater of Moorcroft by two points again confirming head coach Travis McDermott’s observation earlier in the year that the two would meet in the finals of the state tournament. The difference seems to be the strong leg attack from the neutral position that has become the signature move for Cole.

In the championship finals, Wyatt McDermott (126) gave up a first period takedown in a loss in the finals to Lovell’s #1 rated Quinton Hecker in a narrow two-point match which could have as easily gone in the Bobcat’s favor. They will face off in the regional for a top seed in the state tournament.

Riley Shaffer (182) also lost in the finals to the #1 rated Rowdy Pfeil of Moorcroft who is expected to win the state championship and demonstrated his ability to do just that.

Freshman Roedy Farrell moved up to #152 and proved he could wrestle well at that weight with a third place tournament finish losing in the semifinals before notching a 7-6 win in the consolation finals over Darrian Black of Moorcroft

Austin Barral (170) earned a 4th place finish for the Bobcats. Also competing for Thermopolis was Jorgre Agguire, Elijah Skelton, and Jason Bowman.

Coach McDermott expressed some satisfaction that the Bobcats condition was at a high level. “We’ll be topping that off in the next couple of weeks. We won the matches we should win,” he added. “Austin has shown progress all season, and he’s a hard worker. Elijah had a tough draw this tournament, but he’ll be all right. Everybody wrestled well.”

The Bobcats will be tested in the next two weeks as they face Glenrock at home for senior night on Friday, February 14, and travel to Lovell for a couple of matches the next day. All this the week before the Regional qualifying tourney for the state tournament at Wind River High School the February 21-22.
