Mary Elizabeth Bury

Mary Elizabeth Bury, 89, passed away suddenly December 24, 2019, in Casper at the Wyoming Medical Center.

Born May 4, 1930, in Pleasant Plain, Ohio, she was the daughter of Walter and Edna Mae (Waites) Shank. As her mother died at birth, she was raised by her grandparents then came to Thermopolis, Wyo., at the age of 16 to be with her father and stepmother, Ruth. She graduated from Thermopolis High School.

Mary was employed at Mrs. Short’s “The Fashion” and Reesey’s Drug. For 37 years she worked for Mountain Bell Telephone as a telephone operator/office manager.

On June 12, 1955, she married John J. Bury, Jr in Thermopolis.

A quiet woman, Mary enjoyed her sweet cat, Isabella “Izzy” and doing girl things with her daughter and friends and family. She was a member of St. Francis Church, Wyoming Telephone Pioneer Association and the VFW Auxiliary. 

Mary is survived by her daughter, Bridget Bury of Thermopolis; sisters, Helen Berger of Lander, Mildred “Mid” Johnson of Casper and Linda Chopping of California; and nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John, Jr, 2005; brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 2 at 11 a.m. at Mortimore Chapel with Father Randy Oswald of St. Francis Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Monument Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given in Mary’s name to T-Town Crusaders.
