Just because it is winter doesn’t mean you have to stop fishing out on Boysen reservoir. In fact, ice fishing has been good so far this year.
Fisheries biologists are saying the upper reservoir areas are the best, particularly near the Poison Creek Bay area. Sauger and trout are the two species coming through the ice most often for anglers who have been out on the ice.
Wyoming Game and Fish wants anglers to remember it is important to recognize the difference between Sauger and Walleye because of the differences in creel limits. Only two Sauger are allowed while six Walleye are the daily limit.
Walleye and Sauger must remain whole until you’re off the ice and done fishing for the day. If you plan to filet for transportation, a piece of skin at least one-inch square must be left on the fish for identification.
Remember, never go out on the ice alone and it is not recommended to drive a vehicle onto the ice. Ice should be at least four-inches thick and clear to be safe for walking on or eight-inches thick if the ice is cloudy.
Of course warm clothing is a must for ice fishermen and don’t forget to bring along a few snacks as you are required to be in attendance of your fishing rods, within 300 yards, as long as you have a line in the water.
