Wrestlers next action in January

A busy week for Bobcat wrestlers saw them taking on Greybull/Riverside Thursday in Greybull. Open weights were costly for the Bobcats as Greybull/Riverside won a 44-20 decision over the Bobcats.

“As we are understaffed in the (lighter) weights, our duals are going to be tough to win,” coach Travis McDermott said.

He added, “We have to up our conditioning as well as our competition level…Our technical skills will have to get sharper to win the big matches.” Far from being discouraged, McDermott said, “We have some great committed young athletes who will be making a run for state titles.”

Riley Shaffer led the mat effort for the Bobcats in Greybull with a tech fall, and exchange student Jorge Aguirre recorded a decision by hanging on to an early lead. Forfeits to Logan Cole and Remington Ferree accounted for the balance of Bobcat scoring.

Friday opened well for the combination of six Bobcats and eight Douglas JVs as they won their first three duals against Cody 48-30, Douglas SD 57-18, Rock Springs 48-28 and then lost to the Worland Warriors 18-66.

Those four duals saw Thermopolis wrestlers post a record of 15-3 on the mat with 12 falls. Shaffer led the way with 4-0 and four falls, Cole and Ferree added 5 wins and 5 falls, Farrell and Cole Christianson added 4 wins and 3 falls and Elijah Skelton added 2 wins.

This effort propelled the Thermopolis/Douglas combo into the gold bracket for Saturday’s activities minus Roedy Farrell’s presence from the lineup for an injury suffered Friday. Three duals in the gold team bracket were against powerful Powell (tournament winner), Lovell and Lander.

Again, individual Bobcats demonstrated their strength with 8 victories (7 by fall), and 4 losses. For the tournament, Shaffer was 6-2 (5 by fall), Ferree was 6-0 (6 by fall), Cole was 3-1 (3 falls), Christianson was 3-2, Farrell was 2-1 with 2 falls and Skelton was 2-5 with 2 falls.

Fellow Bobcat Austin Barral completed the roster for Shoshoni at the 182 slot coming out with a record of 3 wins (3 by fall) and 4 losses.

Three Bobcats competed in the “Best of the Best” competition – Ferree, Cole, and Shaffer. Ferree lost in a close match on a stall point. Both Cole and Shaffer suffered pins, but none of those winners are to be found in the 2A class, and all will be seen several times in the future at other tournaments so settlement time may be coming.

Next action for the Bobcats will be JV action on Jan. 4 in Cody, and the V/JV Shane Shatto tournament in Douglas Jan. 10 and 11. The Shatto Tourney will be a good test for the Bobcats according to coach McDermott. “It will be a step up in competition, and a start to the run to state,” said McDermott.
