We are so very lucky as a community to have such bright, talented students in our school system. I went to see the Fall Drama Showcase on Tuesday night and came away simply amazed at the things these young people can do. Not only were there Shakespearian soliloquies, there was singing and dancing and the “Tell Tale Heart’ to top the evening off. The arts have always been a part of my life. I did choir, band, show choir, jazz band and Dixieland Band all through high school along with speech and debate. To this day, I cannot be at a parade, hear a drum cadence, and not automatically start walking to the beat of those drums. As a speech coach I see their scenes in my mind and know exactly the way I want it to sound. This usually hits me in the morning as I brush my teeth because let’s face it, I never stop thinking about these kids and what they’re doing, even after the season is over. To watch these young people putting all their passion into their performance is the same as watching a football team, basketball team or a volleyball team put everything they have into their time on the field or the court. The way they display their passions may be different, but the hours and the tears put in before the performance or the game are all the same. These teens are finding out who they are and what they love. If you have a chance, I highly recommend going to see what these young people are doing. They will be performing tonight (Thursday) and Friday night in the auditorium, starting at 7 p.m.
