Speech team opens season in Worland

Hot Springs County High School’s Speech and Debate team started their season off very early with a trip to the Worland Novice Tournament on Saturday.

According to coach Cindy Glasson, a novice-only tournament gives the newest members of the team a chance to see what everything is all about without the pressure of a major tournament.

“Since these are all novices they can come in and compete on their own level first thing,” she said. “Its very hard to just toss them into a full varsity tournament in January without getting their feet wet first.”

Coach Lyle Wiley echoed those sentiments saying, “New competitors had a chance to compete for the first time, and they were fabulous. Varsity members judged rounds and supported their new teammates.”

Results from the tournament showed all of the new members placing within the top 10.

Aime Robinson placed first in humor, Josiah Butler, second in extemp and Corina Williams took second in drama.

Madeline Wagler and Tori Barnes tied for third in LD debate with both Cats holding a 2-1 record.

Karina Lea placed third in congressional debate, followed by Taydee Landrum in fourth. Ryan Miller rounded out the congress team, placing eighth.

Brooklyn Brown also placed seventh in humor.

Next up for the Bobcat team will be their home meet on the 13-14 of December.
