Thermopolis Middle School Football came home with a 34-14 win against Worland on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Coach Shane Corpening was excited about the win, and noted Will Coale did a great job. Though no statistics are taken at the middle school level, Corpening said Coale had close to 150 yards and three touchdown passes.
Regarding receivers, Ethan Music had an important touchdown catch to give the junior Bobcats a 14 point lead going into the half. Ethan Crow caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter that sealed the game for them.
As for the offense as a whole, Corpening said the team of Sean Slagle, Chase Herring, John Baker, Tucker Lake and Mason Reese did a great job protecting the quarterback and opening some holes. “We dominated the line of scrimmage,” the coach said.
As for defense, Corpening said they got better as the game went. Worland scored early on their first drive, he noted, and coach Dean Despain did a good job in making some in game adjustments. Those changes kept Worland from putting on any more points until the seventh graders had hit the field.
With the season coming to a close in the next couple weeks, Corpening said he’s not planning to change much and will stay true to what has been working this season and last year. He believes that in middle school football it’s important to establish fundamentals and not get too complicated with offense or defense.
The middle school team will be playing against Lovell at home on Saturday, Sept. 28, then will close their season with two away games, at Lander on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and at Riverton on Saturday, Oct. 5.
