Lady Cats show team effort

It’s been a busy week for Bobcat Ladies Volleyball with all three teams going to Powell last Thursday night, the freshmen girls were at home against Cody on Friday night and then turned around and headed to Buffalo for a tournament on Saturday.

Coach Shannon Hill said all three teams played great volleyball against Powell, even though the freshmen and JV teams lost in three.

“The JV team just barely lost their third in an amazing comeback,” coach Hill said, “falling short by two points, but they played so hard.”

The Varsity Cats played amazingly and won in four games against Powell, 25-12, 25-23, 26-28 and 25-14.

Hill said the girls showed consistency and grit, never letting down the whole match.

Setter Dani Jo Pebbles did a great job mixing up the offense and the hitters did a great job across the board.

Ashley McPhie led with 11 kills and two blocks, followed by Kaylee DeVries and Ttum Vialpando with nine kills each. Sesi Jensen added seven kills and led in aces with four. McPhie also led in digs with 14.

“This win was a great team effort,” Hill said, “with Elisa Weber staying super consistent at the net and her and Bri DeVries passing consistently of serve/receive.

“We have a great group of girls on this team who continually support each other while pushing eah other to be successful. It was a solid win for us.”

The freshman girls met Cody on Friday and lost in three, but Hill said they were very competitive. They then traveled to Buffalo for a tournament on Saturday and went 3-3 on pool play and lost to Lovell in three during bracket play.

The JV and Varsity teams went to the Rawlins 3A tournament with the JV team going 3-3 and Varsity 2-4 on Friday, seeding both teams in the silver bracket for Saturday play.

On Saturday, the JV team went 1-2, losing a close one to Worland.

The Varsity team went 2-1 in the silver bracket, beating Big Piney (21-12,21-9), losing to Lander (21-13, 21-3), and beating Newcastle (21-17, 21-16) to take third in the tourney.

“A lot of positive things came from this tournament for us,” Hill said, “such as knowing we can play with any 3A team if we play consistently and knowing that we can finish matches.

“We still have a long way to go before regionals. Our girls are so great when they are on, but they need to focus on every ball and not let the mental aspect of volleyball take over.”

The Lady Cats will have their first conference match today (Thursday) in Newcastle.
