Lady Cats struggle at Border Wars

The Lady Cats volleyball team headed to Cody last week to compete in the Border Wars between Wyoming and Montana teams.

Head coach Shannon Hill said the girls unfortunately went 0-4 for the weekend, but she saw a lot of positive things out of the team despite their record.

“Our girls served really well and were able to knock teams out of system by how tough they were serving,” she said. “When this team has their momentum and in their rhythm, they are so talented and tough to beat.

“As you can see from the scores, our girls are very competitive, we just need to focus on consistency and finishing.”

Hill said she saw some great things from each of the players and again the leadership of the seniors was impressive.

Sesi Jensen and Ashley McPhie led the team in kills throughout the weekend, hitting on the outside. Kaylee DeVries and Tatuum Vialpando stepped up in the middle position at the net and DeVries did great on defense as well.

Dani Jo Pebbles had great hands throughout the weekend, while Grace Whitt and Reagan Severance helped out at the net.

Hill added the girls are playing very scrappy on the defensive end of the game with Bri DeVries and Elisa Weber helping out in the back row.

The weekend scores were Lady Cats (28,17,24,25) vs Custer, Mont. (26,25,26,27); Lady Cats (25,11,11,13) vs Hardin, Mont. (13,25,25,25); Lady Cats (25,21,12,26) vs Laurel, Mont. (20,25,25,28) and Lady Cats (15,21,22) vs Livingston, Mont. (25,25,25).

“There is still a lot of room for growth,” coach Hill said, “but we look forward to our match against Powell and a weekend full of volleyball in Rawlins. Our goal for the weekend is consistency and to prove to ourselves that we can be competitive at this level.”

The JV team went to Pavillion and played a tournament as well. They had a great weekend of growth and went 9-3 for the weekend, beating every opponent at least once.

The freshmen played in Basin last Thursday and lost in three, but again showed so much improvement as a team and passed very well.
