There’s something to be said about a flag at half-staff. It certainly is noticeable when we see our stars and stripes flying not as high as they should. It gives us pause, time to think and to reflect.
Though there is no doubt as to why our Broadway flag, as well as the magnificent display from the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department, was at half-staff for September 11 there are often times when the Flag is seen at this post and we may not know why.
Thankfully, having search engines literally on hand, we can quickly look up why. Though whether you know the reason or not, a flag at half-staff is not something to just glance up at as you’re walking by. They are often flown in remembrance, acknowledging the memories of those who have died in military service or when a national tragedy occurs. Additionally, they fly when political figures such as current and former presidents, or members of Congress, Supreme Court or House of Representatives.
And for that day, week, or even a month when our Flag is at half-staff, it connects us. Despite differences in politics, race, sex, or personal ideals, that Flag still represents us and, for however brief, unites us as a country.
Perhaps this September 11, the rain falling here adds another aspect. One of renewal, and of washing things clean to give us a chance to start again. It’s also representative of the tears shed for those lost, not just on that day 18 years ago but in all the wars and tragedies the United States has faced.
So when you see a flag at half-mast, you might question why it’s there and do a quick search on your phone, but before you do, take a moment, however small, to understand its meaning.
