Let's enjoy the last of summer

There were a few mornings this week when we all awoke to temperatures in the 50-degree range. Some of our days were only in the 70’s, too, but have you noticed how much different 70 degrees is as we ease our way into September than it was going into May?

In May, we couldn’t wait to get the shorts out when it hit 70, but this week I’ve been tempted to toss on a sweater here and there.

I’ll admit my grasp of science isn’t always the greatest, so I’ve come to the conclusion that temperature is really based on anticipation, not the actual temperature.

We so want it to be summer after hibernating for four months that 70 feels like heaven. Today, we’re looking forward to bonfires and football, so 70 feels a bit nippy now. You can almost smell the green of spring in May and within a few weeks that smell will be more earthy as fall settles in.

We were fortunate this summer that the official temperatures never made their way into triple digits so I’m hoping the winter won’t see too many nights below zero. However, the Old Farmer’s Almanac is saying we’re going to have a rollercoaster of storms this winter with some frigid temperatures, so maybe investing in a few pairs of wool socks are in order.

For now, though, let’s just enjoy the last of the warmth of the sun on our faces in the afternoons and slip into that flannel shirt in the evenings and take in the warmth of the fire in the backyard with family and friends.

Crunching leaves, pumpkin spice everything and caramel apples are coming soon!
