Come out to the fair

This next week will be busy with the county fair. Vehicles will be going in and out of the fairgrounds, youth and adults will go before the judges with their exhibits, and be sure to hearing plenty of noise and some very distinct aromas at the grounds as the animals start pouring in.

Having lived my life in rural communities, the fair was always something I looked forward to. In my younger days, of course, it was all about the rides and strolling through the animal exhibits. Though never an entering an exhibit or showing an animal, over the years I started appreciating the work people put into the event.

Though the fair itself lasts only a week, exhibitors spend months getting projects ready, growing produce, trying to find just the right photo to enter. And let’s not forget the patience our kids show in caring for and showing their animals. It’s a year-round commitment.

Though the summer temps lately have increased the desire to stay indoors with the comfort of air conditioning, schedule some time this next week to come down to the fairgrounds and watch an event or two. If you’ve got the time, visit with those who have entries. Ask them questions, learn the processes in preparing for the show ring. It’s really a lot to take in, but I guarantee you’ll come away with a better appreciation for this annual event.

See you at the fair!
