Enjoy more than just the day

This Sunday marks one of two days throughout the year recognizing our parents, with Father’s Day. It’s the seventh one for me, and I look forward to seeing what my wife and boys have up their sleeves this year.

But, special as these days are, both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are only a small recognition of the time, dedication and effort that goes into being a parent. The sacrifices men and women give to raising children the best that they can, whether those children are theirs, fostered or adopted, is truly something to respect and recognize beyond just a day or two out of 365.

Though Father’s Day is set aside to recognize dads, 24 hours just doesn’t cut it; the same goes for moms. They should be recognized year-round for all they do. Likewise, parents, don’t just accept these two days as the only chances you get to make a special day for you and the kids. I’m not saying breakfast in bed has to become a daily routine or that you should kick back in the recliner all day, every day, but pencil a few into your schedule.

And for those of us who have lost our mother, father or even a child, these days can be difficult as well a celebratory; it’s important to be understanding if you know of someone who is experiencing loss and isn’t up for hearing “Happy Father’s Day!”

To all those current dads and those soon-to-be, enjoy your day but remember, it’s just one day of many.
