Have you ever wondered how to learn to mountain bike? Or maybe you’re an “old hat” at fly fishing. Whatever your level of knowledge of the great outdoors, Hot Springs County Recreation and the Hot City Outdoor Alliance is having a special day where beginners and veteran outdoor people can come together at their first Hot City Outdoor Day.
You may only participate in one group, but the day begins with check in at the Washakie Shelter in Hot Springs State Park at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8. Events will begin at 8 a.m. and lunch will be provided at noon. Groups will rotate every two hours throughout the day before ending at 5 p.m.
There will be two groups to choose from, group A featuring mountain biking, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding as well as fly fishing.
The mountain biking will begin at the shelter and travel throughout the park. Rock climbing will be done behind the Big Horn Basin Children’s Center, and the fly fishing, paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking will be done in the cooling ponds.
Group B that will cover horse packing, 3D archery, GPS and bear awareness.
Horse packing will be held in the corrals where the former Rio Drive-In was. The Children’s Center will also be doing the 3D archery lessons. You can learn about the different GPS coordinates with practice throughout the park, and bare awareness will be held at the horse shoe pits behind the Plaza Hotel.
Lunch is provided by Hot Springs State Park and the Friends of Hot Springs State Park. Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital is donating water bottles for all the participants and the rec district is helping with registration and first aid for the day.
Wyoming Game and Fish and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation are providing equipment, but if you have your own, you are encouraged to bring it along so you are learning with what you personally have.
There are so many recreational opportunities in Hot Springs County and this is the perfect way to find out more about them.
Registration is online only at hscrecreation.com under the Programs tab and will be $30 per participant. Must be 12 or older to attend. Registration deadline is June 5.
The event will go on, regardless of weather.
