Several Bobcats headed to state track in Casper

Of about 30 members of the Hot Springs County High School Track and Field Team who competed at the Regional competition in Burns last Friday and Saturday, 17 will be headed to the 3A State Championship at Casper this week, May 16-18.

Coach Aimee Kay said the number of students that have qualified - meaning they finished in the top eight of their event or top four for relays at Regionals, though others have pre-qualified through the season - was more than what she expected.

As in previous meets, the Bobcats set several personal records (PRs), and Olivia Weyer matched the school record of 9'3" she set earlier in the season. Kay was surprised with the number of PRs, considering the rain, sleet and winds on Friday and high winds Saturday.

"It really hung up my jumpers," Kay said, "and even the runners because they'd come down that last 100 with a pretty decent headwind. I'd just tell them ' get your head down and power through it.'"

Jarron Mortimore hit a PR in the 300 hurdles but finished ninth. Kay noted he hadn't run the event all year and she hopes he understands it will be a good race for him next year. He took eighth in the high jump with another PR.

Other qualifiers at Regionals include Weyer, Ashley McPhie in the high jump and triple jump, the 4x800 girls relay team, the 4x400 boys team, the boys sprint medley relay, Julie Johnson in the long jump, Logan Cole in the shot put and discus, Kolby George in the 800 meters and 1600 meters, Blake Williams in the pole vault, McKenna Bomengen in the 800 meters, 1600 meters and 3200 meters, Tahja Hunt in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters, Sesi Jensen in the long jump and Kaylee DeVries in the 300 meter hurdles.

Though Ethan Becher and Sean Miller were unable to compete, Kay said they came along for Regionals and helped out. Jazy Steadman also supports the team as a trainer.
