Golfers take second

The Bobcat Golf Team played their fourth tournament for the spring in Cody last Friday, competing against six schools, coming out with a second place finish.

Lander Valley High School placed first with an overall total of 312, the Cats posted 395 and Riverton rounded out the top three with a 409 for the day.

Freshman Hardy Johnson led the team with a score of 74, placing him second in the individual scores.

Junior Jeffry Clark carded a 103, Kyle Roessing scored a 106 for his best score of the spring season and Will Clark scored a 112. Lee Grimm and Tyler Kay tied with a 114.

“Tyler (Kay) made a considerable improvement for the tournament,” coach Joey Johnson said, “and is making very noticeable improvements to his driver and iron play.

“The scores for the week have been lower, however the wind was brutal and the boys played hard to put up a second place finish.”

Temperatures were very cold in Cody on Friday with winds from 20 to 25 m.p.h, making the course very challenging.

On the girls side, Maddie Stam carded a 116 and earned a ninth place finish in the girls varsity division.

“Maddie remains consistent in her play and I look for her to be a contender this coming fall for the State Championship,” Johnson said.

The middle school fielded a full team in Cody as well with Spencer Calhoun, Hadley Johnson, Owen McCumber, Jonah Needham and Seth Weyer.

Hadley Johnson played well, scoring an 86 to finish in second place for middle school individuals.

Weyer scored a 106, coming out in seventh place and McCumber brought in eighth place with a 111. Both boys posted their highest scores to date in Cody.

Needham and Calhoun scored 131 and 132 respectively.

The middle school team placed second in the team competition and this was just their third outing of the season.

“All five team members played outstanding and they keep improving from tee to green,” Johnson said. “I look for this group of eighth grade boys to really help out our high school team in the years to come. They are really making solid improvements and are putting in the time needed to be solid youth golfers.”
