It seems like every week of the year gives us something to celebrate, whether it’s personal milestones such as birthdays or anniversaries, up to statewide and national celebrations May is no exception, recognizing our teachers, law enforcement and nurses nearly all at the same time.
May 6-12 is both Nurse Appreciation Week and Teacher Appreciation Week. In the grand scheme of the job market, these can often be some of the hardest positions and the least recognized. Both require an extreme amount of patience and care shown fellow human beings, much of which is not returned by those in their charge.
Here in Hot Springs County, the school district and hospital district do a good job of recognizing these key members of their staff, but it doesn’t make the job any easier when a patient or student becomes unruly or inconsolable and they are the only people around to help.
And keep in mind there are those who work in private areas, in both of these fields. There are nurses who provide in-home care — sometimes sharing their patients last moments with them — and private schools and tutors who have to build their own approach to working with their students.
For these individuals, their jobs become more than just work. They’re building relationships and helping people continue in the course of their lives wherever they’re headed. If you haven’t taken the time to do so, let this week be a reminder for you to go out and show your appreciation to a teacher or nurse who has made a difference in you or your child’s life. Even if it was years back.
Also, while you’re spreading some thanks, keep in mind that May 13-17 is Police Appreciation Week and they also deserve a pat on the back and “job well done” for putting their lives out there to keep us safe, clean up the drug issues in town and protect the community.
Just like with teachers and nurses, it’s an often thankless job, so be sure to take the time and show your appreciation to those who make a positive difference in our community, not just during the next two weeks but whenever you get the chance.
