Longwell continuing with cat traps

With the warm weather we’re starting to see a lot more animals out and about, including more domesticated species like dogs and cats.

Animal Control Officer Ame Longwell estimated there are still around 1,500 feral cats around town and she is working to reduce that number. She noted she trapped 72 at the town shop last fall and has confirmed that none have returned.

Those who have large numbers of cats on their property are encouraged to call the Thermopolis Police Department at 864-3114, to have officer Longwell come over and trap them. Longwell also noted its important that people not drop off cats where large colonies are already appearing as this can compound the problem.

People who call will be put on the rotation list for traps, but Longwell explained they can do trap contracts as well. Under these contracts, people will be given traps. When a cat is secured in one, they can contact her via the police department and she will contact the veterinarian’s office to let them know a cat is coming in.

Longwell stressed that the traps are humane and trapped cats are taken to a veterinarian to determine if they could be adopted or re-homed, or if they are someone’s pet.

There are also cats that have been trapped through trap, neuter, release programs which she doesn’t want taken out as they are unable to reproduce. She works to keep a list of cat descriptions of those that are neutered or pets, to help ensure they are not taken.

There are only certain days Longwell is able to trap, based around the vet schedules, but she noted it is necessary in order to get the feral cat population under control and prevent the spread of disease.
