Though the Hot Springs County High School track team was scheduled for back-to-back meets at Glenrock April 12 and Riverton April 13, the former was cancelled due to weather. Coach Aimee Kay noted the weather was nicer than anticipated in Riverton, not warm but also not windy.
Having only one meet was a bit of a bummer, Kay said, because it was divided up to where the students would have had more variety with two days. There were still plenty of personal records, and a few are coming close to pre-qualifying for state - Jesse Skelton in the 200 meters, and Logan Cole in shot put and discus.
This was the first meet where all of the distance runners competed, and there weren't really that many gone at all, Kay said, though there were some who were at State FFA or gone for family reasons. There are a couple more weeks where Kay is looking to get as many meets as possible. This week there is only one, with a triangular at Worland with Ten Sleep on April 18. Next week will see invites at Buffalo April 25 and at Meeteetse April 26, then Thermopolis will host the Bobcat Invite May 3.
Kay said she wants to go to Buffalo for the opportunity to compete against 3A students on the other side of the mountains. She also feels like the Meeteetse event is a lot of fun and a great confidence booster as they've always had good weather and come away with some good times.
As for the Thermopolis meet, Kay said everyone in the state seems to like it because we have a nice track and we typically have good weather.
Distance kids are getting some foundational training, she noted, not quite hitting their personal records yet but they are creeping up there, but she knows with the training the coaches are planning they'll get there. Pole vaulters and high jumpers are being consistent and Kay said they will be adding some drills to help them move forward and not stall out.
