Young hunter challenge set

Hunter education graduates are invited to attend the third annual local Young Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) on Saturday, April 27 at the Bob Milek Memorial Range eight miles west of Thermopolis on Highway 120.

For participants to be eligible, they must have completed the hunter education and have their card. Those who have not yet registered for the YHEC event can contact Cynthia Garbin at 921-8304. Copies of cards, as well as the $5 registration fee, can be mailed to Garbin at P.O. Box 310, Thermopolis, WY 82443.

There are two divisions, junior and senior. Those in the junior division must be 14 years of age or under on or before Aug. 1. For the senior division, participants must be 15-18 years of age on or before Aug. 1.

Individual events also fall into two categories, responsibility and shooting. Responsibility events include a hunter safety trail challenge and hunting wildlife identification challenge. Shooting events are the hunting shotgun challenge, the “22LR” rifle challenge, the hunting muzzleloader challenge and the hunting archery challenge.

A parent or guardian will remain at the range with each challenge participant, though remaining in the spectator area and not coaching or communicating with participants during the course.

Garbin looks forward to the event and noted there are participants not only from Thermopolis but from around the state coming to compete in the challenge.
