Though the Hot Springs County High School Track Team had a week off over Spring Break, it didn’t stop them from breaking their personal records and even setting a new school record as the 1600 sprint medley team of Blake Williams, Jesse Skelton, Wyatt McDermott and Ethan Becher placed third with 3:54.33.
Among those setting new personal records were: Jazmen Jensen with a 32nd place finish of 16.05 in the 100 meters, Ashley McPhie with a 15th place height of 4’ in the high jump and Olivia Weyer with a second place height of 8’9” in the pole vault.
Jesse Skelton set a new personal record with a third place time of 24.82 in the 200 meters. Kolby George and Wyatt McDermott also set personal records in the 800 meters — George with fifth place at 2:11.03 and McDermott close behind in seventh at 2:11.07. Blake Williams, McDermott and Skelton all had new personal records in the pole vault — Williams at first with 11’4”, McDermott at seventh with 9’10” and Skelton at ninth with 9’4”
Jaxson Jensen has a new personal record with a 14th place distance of 16’5.25” in the long jump, and Logan Cole has a new record with a seventh place distance of 121’7” in the discus.
Coach Aimee Kay also noted Julie Johnson cleared the opening height with a third place height of 4’6” for the high jump, an event she has only been doing for a couple weeks.
Kay said the team continues to get better and coming off the break they did alright, with a couple super close to beating their personal bests. She plans to spend the next couple weeks building their base and continuing to get in better shape. She noted there is room for improvement with the handoffs in the relays. This week they’ll have back-to-back meets this week, competing Friday and Saturday. Kay said this provides for more opportunity for competition and conditioning.
Weather could impact practice and the meets this week, as colder temperatures and snow are forecast. Kay hopes the cold doesn’t impact the meet at Glenrock on Friday, as the event provides opportunity for the students to see schools outside the basin they don’t normally get to outside of regionals. Saturday’s meet will be at Riverton.
It’s nice to see the personal records and growth, Kay said, as the students are continually moving toward being their very best.
