Cats, Lady Cats wrap up basketball season at regionals

Lady Cats look to build in 2020

Springs County High School's Lady Bobcats basketball team ended their season with back-to-back losses at the Regional Tournament in Wheatland last weekend.

Thursday, the girls lost to #1 ranked Rawlins by a score of 80-58.

According to coach Matt McPhie, the girls scored more points in this game than they had all season – against a very good team, including a season high of 41 points in the second half.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McKenna Bomengen who had a strong night with 20 points. Bomengen also added six assists and five steals to her stats in a very productive night.

Sesi Jensen added nine points and six rebounds, Kaylee DeVries added eight points and three steals, and Ashley McPhie closed out the game with nine points, five rebounds and two assists.

The loss to Rawlins placed the girls in the loser's bracket and set them against Torrington on Friday for the elimination game.

"I am so proud of the effort and fight that our girls put up against a very good Torrington team," McPhie said. It was a very close contest, back and forth. In the end, Torrington hit a few more shots than we did, but our girls hung in there until the end.

"We are very proud of the improvement these girls have accomplished throughout the course of this season."

Bomengen led the way again with 13 points and four steals. Jensen had a very strong game with 12 points, eight rebounds and a block.

McPhie added eight points to the board as well as two assists and Tahja Hunt controlled the floor very well from the point guard position, dishing out a season high five assists.

"The girls had tremendous growth throught the season and we as a staff look forward to growth in the off-season," McPhie said. "With no seniors on the team, the team will look to build and have a very successful campaign next year."
