Lady Cats prepare for Rawlins

The Bobcat girls basketball team had a busy weekend last week, hitting the court for three different contests against Newcastle, Buffalo and Douglas.

They started the weekend with a big win over Newcastle, 47-32, just weeks after losing to them by 12 points.

"This 27-point swing is in large part to our girls and their commitment each day at practice," coach Matt McPhie said. "They're putting in extra work, have great attitudes and are being great teammates each day.

"The victory in Newcastle was a combination of excellent play from many girls and just an overall great team effort."

Sesi Jensen had a tremendous game, leading the Lady Cats with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

"Sesi (Jensen) has been diligent in her efforts to improve and help her team be successful," McPhie said, "and we as a staff are extremely proud of the leadership and positive attitude she brings to the program day in and day out."

McKenna Bomengen scored 21 points for the team and added nine rebounds. Kaylee DeVries had three steals, three deflections and three offensive rebounds as she continues to spark the team while she is on the floor.

Ashley McPhie added seven points to her stats along with four rebounds and four steals. Tahja Hunt ran the point guard position well, making great decisions and taking care of the ball, all while knocking down a three-pointer to help rally the team.

On Friday and Saturday night, the girls faced two of the top five teams in the state and came up short.

Friday, at Buffalo, they fell 75-32.

Jensen and Bomengen lead the way in scoring with 10 points each. DeVries continued to display her ability to steal, racking up four takeaways against Buffalo. McPhie had seven points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Saturday, the team fell to number one ranked Douglas by a score of 71-20.

Jensen had eight rebounds and two steals while McPhie had six rebounds and six points.

This week the varsity team heads to Wheatland for the 3A Regional tournament. The Lady Cats will take on Rawlins in their first game on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
