The Hot Springs County Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Hot Springs County Museum. The program will be “Petrified Wood in the Absaroka Range,” presented by Larry Amundson.
This presentation will describe prehistoric high altitude camping and tool making sites in the southern Absaroka Range. Human occupation in these remote portions of the Washakie Wilderness is evidenced by the presence of surface lithic flakes created during tool production using petrified wood. Amundson’s exploration of the region commenced in the summer of 2007 and continues each summer.
Amundson is an avocational archaeologist interested in high altitude archaeology. He is a Wyoming native and past president of the Wyoming Archaeological Society..
The meeting is free and open to everyone. Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Barb Vietti at 921-1551.
