Lady Cats do well at BHB Tourney

The Lady Cats competed against Shosoni, Powell and Lander over the weekend at the Big Horn Basin Tournament hosted by Powell.

The varsity team came out on top of Shoshoni on Friday with a 38-19 win.

Sesi Jensen lead the team in scoring, dropping in 10 points while Tahja Hunt helped the offense with three assists. As a team, they had a total of 10 assists.

On the defensive side, the team’s leading rebounder against Shoshoni was McKenna Bomengen with seven and Jensen, right on her heels with six. Defensively, the girls forced 22 turnovers.

Later on Friday, however, the Lady Cats fell to Powell with a final score of 61-27.

Bomengen lead the way in scoring with 13 points and Hailie Weber and Hunt chipped in four each.

“The Powell team was efficient scoring the ball and our girls had a difficult time finding a rhythm on the offensive end,” said coach Matt McPhie. “We must find a way to be more aggressive with the basketball and get our girls to the free throw line.

“In the Powell game, we attempted only eight free throws, compared to 38 attempts by the Powell team. We must play more sound defense, as well as be more aggressive on the offensive end.”

Jensen lead the team in defense with eight rebounds and added two assists to her record.

Saturday didn’t go much better for the team, falling to Lander, 57-33.

The girls came out slow and had a difficult time scoring the ball early against Lander.

“Our defense was inconsistent,” McPhie said, “which lead to easy baskets by Lander and we dug a big hole early in te game. Again, lack of free throws and many for the opponent was an issue.”

Lander went to the line 26 times compared to the Cats’ 11.

Ashley McPhie lead the scoring against Lander with eight points as well as three assists. Jensen added another seen points and an additional three assists. Jensen also had a great rebounding game, coming down with 10.

The freshmen girls played against the Meeteetse JV team on Tuesday, Jan. 8, winning 38-31.

Mariah Brooks lead the offensive attack with 12 points and Julie Johnson and Kamry Bowman both added 10 points as well.

“The girls came out pretty strong,” said coach Dana Bjorhus, “but I fels like we missed opportunities to push the ball and our defensive intensity lacked for a majority of the game.

“We gave them easy transition points and looks at the basket, but the girls were able to get good looks and make some big stops when we needed them to keep our lead.”

The freshman team starts conference play this Friday against Newcastle and then against Douglas on Saturday.
