Following an extremely high-speed chase Saturday afternoon, the driver was stopped and taken into custody a few miles outside of town.
According to Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) Lieutenant Erin DeVries, WHP troopers attempted to stop Yu Qun, who was driving a silver Kia SUV, starting at 2:14 p.m. near mile marker 30 on Highway 120. The vehicle was eastbound and travelling at over 100 miles per hour.
DeVries said troopers were using lights and sirens to stop the Qun's vehicle, and they were joined by Hot Springs County deputies, also using lights and sirens. The vehicle continued to speed, however, and was eventually stopped at 2:35 p.m. with stop sticks at mile 5.5.
Qun was arrested for failure to yield to officers and speeding. DeVries noted there was no other criminal activity related to the chase and nothing of criminal nature found in the vehicle, and Qun claimed he simply didn't know he had to stop.
Qun was seen in Hot Springs Circuit Court Tuesday morning, and was fined $145 and $55 costs. Though also sentenced to four days in county jail, that time was considered served.
Court documents further state when Qun was initially observed by the WHP troopers he was travelling at 92 mph, then accelerated to 97 mph. The vehicle's speed fluctuated, according to the report, and it was travelling up to 102 mph before it was stopped.
