Thermopolis Middle School was certainly abuzz last Saturday, with the gymnasium home to several vendors for the Beta Sigma Phi Holiday Affair and the commons having the People for People's Chair-ity Auction for the Backpack Program.
Ranae Baldes with the local Xi Alpha Sigma of Beta Sigma Phi said this year's event seemed a bit slower, though weather may have been a factor. There were a total 33 vendors, and in speaking to them none were unhappy about the turnout. All in all, she said, it was a good day.
Judy Carswell with People for People said this year's auction saw 31 chairs which brought in $2,969. Another $140 in donations brought the total to $3,109.
"It was a wonderful turnout," Carswell said. "We have such a wonderful community, always willing to volunteer and donate to the Backpack Program." The program provides kids in need with food to get them through the weekends.
Carswell noted this year they took bids online and sold a couple chairs that way to the highest bidder.
Cindy Clancy's "Blessing Chair" sold for $350 to an online bidder.
