There is always talk about the “Big One” hitting Yellowstone or an earthquake so large California will slip off into the Pacific, but the reality is, sometimes, even here, we get a temblor or two.
Are you prepared in case of an earthquake?
Join in the World’s Largest Earthquake Drill next Thursday, Oct. 18, with Shake Out Wyoming. Already, more than 27,000 of your fellow Wyoming-ites are registered to participate.
There are three basics to earthquake safety – drop, cover and hold on.
Drop where you are, onto your hands and knees, to protect you from getting knocked down. Stay low and crawl to shelter if possible.
Cover your head and neck with one arm and hand. If you can, crawl under a sturdy table or desk, or crawl next to an interior wall away from windows. Make sure to stay on your knees and bend over to protect internal organs.
Hold on until the shaking stops. You are more likely to get injured if you try to move to another location, even outside, especially if the shaking is strong. They come out of nowhere and you never know if the first shock is just the start of something big.
