Homecoming for the Thermopolis Bobcats will be next week and the school district is inviting everyone to be a participant as they proclaim “One Town, One Team, One Dream.”
The concept is to get the community involved in all the Homecoming activities and see how the environment at the school is changing and evolving into a place students want to be rather than just something they have to finish to get on with their lives.
Dean of Students, Curt Mayer, said the change in attitude will hopefully lead to the district’s goal of zero dropouts.
“The kids are enjoying it,” he said. “We have celebrations every Friday during an assembly. We really want to show the community what we’re doing. We are pulling everyone together and want to get the community’s ideas, let them help out.”
Mayer said this year’s student council has a vested interest in how things are really done at the school.
Student council advisor, London Jenks, said the student council has really taken a huge step this year, becoming more active.
“They are really making a difference,” Jenks said. “They’re doing a great job. Everything feels different. Its a fun time to be at the high school.”
Activities director, Brandon Deromedi, echoes their feelings, “Homecoming kicks off the community being involved. We want them to excel, but we want them to have fun, too.”
Deromedi said they are looking to have the community involved in their weekly assemblies, too.
“We have some people from right here in town who have done some really cool stuff,” he said.
The Friday assemblies are a starting point to give the students a reason to be here that doesn’t revolve around tests and studying. Its a way of building that Bobcat pride again.
Mayer said one of the things they have planned for some of the Friday assemblies is information from each of the different clubs available at school.
“We want them to come in and tell the students what they do,” he said. “We have a goal to have 90% of our students in some kind of activity, whether its sports, robotics, drama or speech.”
