The bakers and creators in town are filling up their jars and baskets in anticipation of a Cookie Jar Auction for Kelly Jo Burr to help with medical expenses incurred since her diagnosis of breast cancer.
Burr was diagnosed in June with cancer in one breast, but when the end of July and the date of her surgery rolled around, she opted for a double mastectomy as a precaution.
The cancer was deep and doctors also removed five of her lymph nodes.
Fortunately, her doctors believe the surgery was a success and Burr will not have to deal with months of chemotherapy or radiation.
A single mother, Burr said she had not been to see a doctor in seven years prior to her diagnosis.
“Go early,” she said, “get that mammogram.”
There is a history of breast cancer in her family, with her mother and her aunt also being diagnosed. Additional family members died from cancer, too.
She said she’s had a lot of positive input from people in town and is especially appreciative of the T-Town Crusaders and the Dare to Wear Pink PRCA Rodeo Committee.
“I’ve had a lot of support,” she said. “People who see me at work, perfect strangers, its been amazing. I don’t think this much support could be found in any other town.”
The Cookie Jar Auction will be held Friday, Sept. 14 at the VFW from 5:30-9:30 p.m.
