Golfers performing well

The Bobcat Golf Team rounded out their third week of competition by bringing home some "hardware" from the Newcastle Tournament as well as the Upton Tournament.

Coach Joey Johnson said the Newcastle tourney was the first time they've been up against all the 2A teams and gave them some idea of what they need to work on and where they sit in the running for the 2A State Championship in September.

The team placed 3rd at the Newcastle meet with a cumulative score of 409, and 3rd at the Upton tournament as well, with a final score of 400.

"I think our players are in a good place and we are starting to see daily improvements," coach Johnson said. "Our team scores have improved every time. We started with 448 at our season opener in Cody, scored 428 in Worland, 409 in Newcastle and 400 in Upton.

"I think we will be 20-30 points better by state and that we will be in a very competitive position."

Scores at the Newcastle tournament were: Hardy Johnson, 71 (1st); Jeffry Clark, 88 (5th); Lee Grimm, 123; Jean-Juc Willson, 166; Will Clark, 127 and Maddie Stam, 108 (1st).

Uptons scores on day two were: Johnson, 72 (1st); Jeffry Clark, 100; Lee Grimm, 111; Willson, 160; Will Clark, 117 and Maddie Stam, 114 (5th).

Of the individual team members, coach Johnson said Jeffry Clark is continuing to get better with his scoring and is starting to put up more consistent scores.

Grimm is improving with each tournament, scoring 12 strokes better from the Newcastle tourney to Upton and is 20 points better on his two-day total for the year. He added he is continuing to focus on chipping and putting to cut more strokes.

Hardy Johnson continues to put up consistent scores and put up a two day total of one under par. His putting in continuing to get better and his work ethic is second to none.

Will Clark is struggling a bit with his game, but coach Johnson said he saw improvement from Newcastle to Upton. Upton has probably the smallest greens in the state and coach was impressed that he improved by 10 strokes from the previous day. He continues to work on his ball striking and he's encouraged by his hard work and determination to improve his game.

Willson had some struggles with ball striking and putting this week, however, he is consistently shooting better than he did at the beginning of the season and he continues to be one of the hardest working members of the team.

Stam, the lone Lady Cat on the team, had a great weekend and is shooting consistently better. She set a goal for the fall to be consistently shooting in the low 100s and she is starting to see that goal come to fruition.

With a first place in Newcastle and a fifth in Upton, Johnson said he sees her just continuing to get better.

The Bobcat Golf Team will head to Buffalo on Thursday for the Buffalo High School Tournament.
