Thermopolis Bobcat Football took to the field with a scrimmage against Shoshoni and Wind River this past Saturday, essentially playing a half against each team with wins of 14-0 against Wind River and 28-6 against Shoshoni.
Coach Matthew McPhie said he was pleased with the intensity and work the boys put in, and they responded well to what was asked of them. Looking at the offense, the coach said Hyrum Rich did well at center, Jarron Mortimore blocked well for the team at tight end and Chandler Maddock also performed well as a linebacker.
Defensively, he commended linebacker Jeffrey Van Antwerp for having his "nose to the ball," and freshman Landon Sosa's interception. Both the offensive and defensive lines played well throughout, McPhie said. Though there were a couple turnovers, the boys know that's something they have to clean up before the season opener this Friday, Aug. 31 at Big Horn at 6 p.m.
This scrimmage was the first real test for the team, and provided opportunity for every young man to get some time on the field. As they move through the season, McPhie said, they are going with the attitude of one week at a time. Looking at the upcoming game against Big Horn, McPhie said they are a big team and there will be some adversity. The boys know and understand that, he said, and they're hungry for action this weekend.
Kickoff for the game at Big Horn is 6 p.m. The Bobcats' first home game is Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against Buffalo.
