La Patronal is a unique brass band from Lima, Peru. Rooted in the tradition of ‘fiestas populares’ or town fairs common in rural villages across Latin America, La Patronal honors these gatherings which celebrate tradition.
The fourteen La Patronal members are the direct descendants of rural musicians from Peru, and use this knowledge of folk culture in combination with their formal music studies to preserve their heritage while also bringing it into the present. Their lively performances include contagious percussion, vibrant brass and winds and visual aspects of ‘fiestas populares,’ including masks as well as traditional dance.
A public performance will be Thursday September 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hot Springs County High School Auditorium. Admission is “Pay what you can,” and free for students. La Patronal will also be working in the school district.
This engagement of La Patronal is made possible through Southern Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin America, a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
The local sponsor is Hot Springs Greater Learning Foundation. Please contact Jacky Wright at 864-4070 for more information.
