Cycle Greater Yellowstone coming through

On Monday, Aug. 13 there will be an estimated 350 cyclists coming through the area for the 2018 Cycle Greater Yellowstone event. The event begins Aug. 11, with cyclists taking off from Cody, and ends in Lander Aug. 18.

Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Meri Ann Rush said cyclists will leave Meeteetse the morning of Aug. 13 and come down highway 120. They will use the Gooseberry cutoff over to Highway 20 and cycle to Kirby, their first stop.

Rush said the main camp site will be the Fountain of Youth RV park, Rush said, but participants also have the option of staying the night in one of the Thermopolis hotels, and shuttle service will be available to take people between the main camp and hotels. Shuttles will also be available for trips to the Wyoming Dinosaur Center.

Rush noted Cycle Greater Yellowstone contacted the school district for buses out to the Legend Rock petroglyph site.

Volunteers will set up tables and meals for the cyclists, and there will be a help desk available with maps of the town and information for different sites, though Rush noted there won’t be much literature handed out as the cyclists don’t have much space for carrying additional items.

As the cyclists head out on Tuesday, Aug. 14, their next stop is Pavillion, then to Lander, with a layover day and an optional 100-mile ride over Togwotee Pass, and on to the finish.
