Second summer school session

Next week will see the start of the second half of the summer school program for students at Ralph Witters Elementary and Thermopolis Middle School.

Lights On Program Coordinator Elisa Daniels explained the sessions will be three weeks, July 23- Aug. 9. Summer school will be Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with Lights On following from 12:30-5:30 p.m. There will be no school sessions on Thursdays, as they are reserved for field trips, and no school or activities on Fridays.

For elementary students, the theme is “pollinators.” The first week, students will learn about bees and their Thursday field trip will be to Bryant Honey, Inc. then on to the fish hatchery and splash pad in Ten Sleep.

The second week, students will learn about bats and take a field trip to Casper to the Science Zone and Jump Craze to “fly like bats.” The third and final week, they’ll learn about hummingbirds, with a tentative field trip to The Reef Indoor Water Park in Billings, Mont.

At the middle school, students in the first week will learn skills to help them survive in the wilderness. They’ll have a chance to put these skills to use with an overnight camping trip to Colter Bay in Jackson.

In the second week, students will take a trip “around the world,” learning about global cultures and celebrations. No field trip is planned.

The third week is “Environmental Awareness Week.” Daniels explained during the school year students were challenged to collect bottle caps, with the winning class receiving an ice cream social.
