With temperatures increasing through last week and reaching 102 degrees Saturday and Sunday, there is plenty of dry grass in the area. The Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small grass fire in town on the morning of July 4, but the department only saw a few small fires on the holiday. Though lightning strikes this past Monday ignited a few more blazes, heavy rainfall helped quench them. However, the department also had to respond to a fire about 2.5 miles southeast of Murphy Dome Oil Field Tuesday evening.
