The official June 1 deadline for filing for local elected positions has now passed, and the coming months look to be an exciting time as we have several candidates in the running for the town and county races.
Moving forward through this election season, we at the Independent Record will provide the fairest coverage we can for those on the ticket. That means we are happy to provide an initial story on the candidates’ reasons for filing, information on their position and other pertinent information. Some of these have already run in our pages, and there will be plenty more in the coming weeks.
However, that story is the only item — outside any comments in our coverage of the upcoming public forum — that we will provide for free. Our Letter to the Editor policy, you will notice, specifically states that “Because of space limitations and for fairness to political candidates, the Independent Record does not accept letters of endorsement or opposition of political candidates nor do we allow support of or opposition to election ballot issues.”
However, those candidates who wish to voice their opinion about the issues, their qualifications and family history are more than welcome to pursue advertising through the IR. Again, to keep things fair to all candidates, any advertising MUST be paid in advance and we will adhere strictly to our deadline of noon on Tuesday for political advertisements. Any ads that come in later will be moved to the next week’s edition.
To our readers, we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity this election, as we have in previous, to attend local “meet and greet” events to let our candidates know your questions and concerns. With as many people we have vying for local offices, education on their positions can help you make your decision at the polls.
