According to high school golf coach Jacob Smith, spring golf is looking promising.
For the first time, eighth grade golfers will be allowed to practice and compete at tournaments with middle school divisions this year.
“This is really huge for the golf team,” Smith said, “because we start practice so early that without some prior contact and work, the freshman season could be a loss. If a freshman wants to come out for the team and waits until school starts, then they have missed 2/3 of our fall season.
“As we have our culminating events in the fall, that means they would have to be a pretty experienced golfer to have a chance of performing well their freshman year.
“I can’t thank Brandon Deromedi and Breez Daniels enough for helping to bring this opportunity to the eighth graders.”
Smith said four young athletes are already taking advantage of the opportunity.
As for the high schoolers, Smith said spring is always the time when they really get to work on their swings and try to make any big changes.
“I look forward to seeing Hudson Roling finish out his high school career this year,” Smith said. “He has been a pleasure to work with as a student and an athlete and is a remarkable young man.”
The rest of the crew from the fall: Cade McLean, Jeffery Clark, Kyle Roessing, and Madeline Stam are all back and excited to work on their game in preparation for next fall. As soon as he recovers from a foot injury, Colton Dobbins will be back out on the course, too.
“I’m excited to see where he is at and hope he decides to golf in the fall as well,” Smith said. “All in all it is shaping up to be a great spring season. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather for us!”
Although practices have started, a tournament schedule has not been set yet.
