Track season gets underway

The Hot Springs County Track and Field kicked off last weekend, with the athletes travelling to Cody for the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational.

Though no team scores were recorded, a couple of the tracksters are already making new personal records, with Jarron Mortimore taking 16th in the high jump with a height of 5’4” and Kaylee Devries placing 26th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 31.98.

Coach Ernie Mecca noted this was the team’s first meet, and about five students were missing due to the spring break, but those who attended competed hard.

Having such as young team, with eight returning letter winners on the girls team and three on the boys, Mecca said a focus is on personal records.

Going into April, Mecca said they will work hard to put students in places where they perform the strongest and will do the most for the team. The focus is two-fold, the coach said, with trying to determine what the best events are for the new kids and breaking personal records.

For the returning letter winners, a focus is also on qualifying for state.
