The Thermopolis Middle School Math Team had plenty to be excited about after their competition in Powell last week, as the seventh grade team placed first and the eighth grade team took second in their divisions
Stephanie Metz explained there were five rounds to the competition, each lasting 20 minutes, in which the students were given 10 questions. A right answer meant 20 points, a wrong answer was a loss of five points and no points were awarded for no answer.
The eighth grade team was shy of first place by 10 points, the equivalent of half a question.
Metz said they had a seventh and eighth grade compete, and scores of the top three individuals from each school are combined together for a team score. The top three individuals are also placed, and Spencer Calhoun placed third in the seventh grade division. Josiah Butler won the eighth grade division and Cole Christiensen ranked third for eighth grade.
There is no preparation for the event, Metz noted, and the questions are eighth grade Wyoming Performance Standard. for the most part so the seventh graders are at a disadvantage.
Overall, Metz said the kids were very excited with their trophy, and the eighth grade students are excited to see how the seventh grade does next year.
