It takes a community to make a great paper

I’m humbled by the fine coverage of my selection to the Wyoming Press Association Foundation Hall of Fame given recently in the Independent Record by Publisher Lara Love.

To twist an old adage, it takes a community to have a great newspaper. The people of Hot Springs County welcomed me as editor and publisher of the IR in 1984 and worked with me (and a bunch of fine IR team members) to make certain the IR was a newspaper doing its job.

I’m especially proud of all that those IR team members have since achieved in Hot Springs County, Wyoming and the nation.

It’s been said a good newspaper is a community talking to itself, and the IR has stood out in that area since (my partners and) former publishers Gretchen Berning and Steve Schenk took over from 1978-84.

Readers who care are a big part of that success, and I hope you continue to help to keep your newspaper great.
