Thank you veterans

This Saturday marks the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I, when the armistice with Germany went into effect. Known initially as Armistice Day and meant to celebrate those who died in World War I, it did not become known as Veterans Day until 1954, nine years after World War II.

It was following the second World War that the day, still then referred to as Armistice Day, was changed to acknowledge all veterans, a tradition carried on through the decades.

This week, take time to acknowledge those veterans in your lives. There are plenty of opportunities afforded by the schools, VFW and by Hawk's Avenue of Flags, just to name a few.

Even if you can't make the time to get to one of the local celebrations, you can say a simple "thank you" to the men and women who have served or are still serving in the United States Armed Forces and, if you have a chance, hear their stories. The service these people have provided allow us the freedoms and opportunities we have in our country, whether it be the chance to speak out on topics you're passionate about, pursuing the educational or workforce opportunities you want or simply having a roof over your head.

But, beyond this given day, these veterans deserve our recognition and appreciation year-round. Whether you're pro- or anti-military, they are stepping up and doing their duty for their country. For all those serving, past, present and future, we thank you.
