Who can forget Lincoln Logs?

As we celebrate National School Lunch week, I got to thinking back on growing up in Thermopolis and the wonderful lunch ladies we had and the delicious meals they used to make for us.

You see, in those days, no one left campus to pop into a fast food joint for lunch, you ate in the lunchroom with everyone else.

The lunch ladies were awesome. In my young mind they were all “grandmothers” who knew what they were doing in the kitchen. Everything we had was made from scratch, from the giant pans of baked cheese sandwiches to the hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes. Oh, and who can forget Lincoln Logs?

And they knew every kid by name. Of course, they had all of us from kindergarten through our high school years, so they got to see us all grow up.

If I close my eyes I’m sure I can still see those green, yellow and blue trays our lunch was served on and remember how many times I fought with my milk carton because my little fingers couldn’t quite get the hang of opening them.

Some time during high school they added something different to the lunch program – a daily choice of getting a hamburger and fries or a slice of pizza instead of the regular lunch. We thought we’d died and gone to heaven because, really, what teenager doesn’t live solely on pizza and burgers?

Nowadays, the meals may have changed, after all, we hadn’t even heard of cheesy, beefy nacos, but the love and care that goes into their preparation is still the same.

HSCSD #1’s lunch ladies still know each kid by name and work very hard to provide the best meals for our student’s best success.
