Friday night, in their second game of the season, the Thermopolis Bobcats lost to Greybull, 33-26.
Coach Matt McPhie stated, "We started out slow offensively and had some miscues that led to some points for Greybull. Give credit to Greybull, they played better than us on Friday and that's how competition goes. I'm very proud of our players' effort and grit all night.
"We fell behind early and were faced with adversity all night long. They hung in there, we got some things cleaned up, and at the end of the night we had the ball with a chance to win the game. We just didn't get it done. We'll learn from it, get better and move forward. The process of learning how to win is no different than the process of preparation, nothing is automatic.
"We'll get back to practice on Monday and continue to swing the axe."
Offensively, McPhie said, there was some great play from senior Cullen Becher, and junior Chandler Maddock. Becher rushed for and threw a touchdown, while Maddock had a rushing and receiving TD. On the offense, seniors Austin Weaver and Andrew Yarbrough played well. "Weaver and Yarbrough are like a couple playground bullies out on the football field," McPhie said. "Great young men off the field, but glad to have them on our team on the field."
Defensively, the coach said, "we played fairly sound football. We had a lot of guys swarming to the football and the pursuit and physicality was good. Greybull has a veteran QB whom we held to 101 yards of passing. Our boys are learning the system better day by day, and our goal is to be playing our best football by week eight."
McPhie also praised Koy Myers for his excellent job in the safety position, and the defensive performance of Chandler Maddock, Dustin Harvey, Jon Harvey and Noah Schwalbe.
This week the boys travel to Lander on Friday, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. "Lander beat us up pretty good last year in a Zero week match," McPhie said. "They have a quality football team and it will be a good test to see if our boys can bounce back."
