One of the more well known celebrations, particularly in New Orleans, is Mardi Gras. Translated to “Fat Tuesday,” the day reflects the practice of eating richer foods before the start of the fasting season of Lent prior to Easter.
The celebration is coming a bit early this year to the Hot Springs County Senior Center, with their Mardi Gras event on Saturday, Sept. 23. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner served from 5:30-7 p.m. The menu includes barbecue riblets, squash, rolls, a pineapple, mandarin orange and grape cup, and dessert. A soup and salad bar will also be available, featuring loaded potato soup.
There is no alcohol, but beverage options include tea, lemonade, water and coffee.
Music will be provided by Eric Kay, and people are encouraged to dance the night away, or just sit back and enjoy the food and music. There will also be a silent auction from 5-8 p.m. featuring items donated from local businesses.
There will be plenty of decoration, and gift bags will be available until they run out. There is a $5 suggested donation for seniors 60 and older, and $10 for non-seniors. Children eight years old and younger are free.
