TMS football season begins

The Thermopolis Middle School football is in its second week of practice, and with a week already under their belts Coach Shane Corpening feels like the team is ahead of where they need to be.

The students have made a good effort, he said, and they are excited, which helps. There are just over 20 students out, but they are making a great effort. Corpening said he doesn't know if there are any glaring weaknesses they need to work on, but will be working them on fundamentals such as tackling, blocking and ball handling - not just catching and throwing, but what to do when you have possession.

Corpening also commended volunteer coaches Travis McDermott and Will Farrell, and assistant coach Dean DeSpain for the hard work they are doing and the knowledge they bring.

This Friday the middle school will take on Shoshoni here, beginning at 4 p.m. Corpening said the game will be telling, adding it's hard to get a good idea of what needs to be done in a scrimmage environment. Friday's game will provide an opportunity to observe the players and make adjustments if necessary.

Those who want to can still join the team, Corpening noted, as they will only have missed a few practices.

The game schedule for the remainder of the season is as follows:

Saturday, Sept. 9 @ Lander, 10 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 16 @ Rocky Mountain, 10 a.m.

Thursday, Sept. 21 @ Worland, 4:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 23 @ Home vs. Cloud Peak, 9:30 a.m.

Saturday, Sept. 30 @ Home vs. Lovell, 10 a.m.

Saturday, Oct. 7 @ Home vs. Greybull, 9:30 a.m.
