The popular Maverik store along Sixth Street will soon be a memory as the old store is taken out and a new, larger one takes its place.
Chief Marketing Officer Aaron Simpson said the store will shut down Aug. 27, and expansion work begins the following day. The company recently purchased the lot to the east, behind the store, and plans are to remove all structures on the lots, including the current store and pumps, to make room for the new building.
The current store is several years old, Simpson said, and in addition to having a more contemporary look the new store will have more than twice the space at 3,800 square feet compared to the 1,800 square foot building there now.
It will also have all the latest "bells and whistles" Simpson said, including a new grill area and new machines for fountain drinks and coffee. The improvements, he noted, makes it easier for shoppers to get around the store.
Outside the building will be improved on as well, Simpson said, with an update façade. The lot will have more parking and an additional pump, and the pumps will be moved back about 40 feet to accommodate longer vehicles.
Those expecting a huge blowout sale in preparation for the store closing might be disappointed, as Simpson explained the hope is the shelves will be cleared out due to the eclipse crowds, and an agreement allows any leftover products to be shipped to other stores if possible.
"Thermopolis has been great for us," Simpson said. He's excited for the new store and hopes it will be a great thing for the town. The expected opening date for the new store will be in the first week of November.
