Make the most of the summer

Well, we finally made it. Those few weeks where the temperatures are right in the “comfort zone,” and any moisture we get doesn’t come in flake form. It’s also a brief moment in the calendar when we get to stop complaining about the cold temperatures, before we switch gears and complain about the heat.

Summer in this part of the world typically comes with at least a couple weeks’ worth of some mercury-rising days, but just because those high temperatures are no excuse to stay indoors when there’s plenty happening around town.

Last weekend saw the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament, bringing over 300 players to the courts at the high school parking lot, along with countless spectators. And, June’s keeping things moving with a livestock show, summer kickoff event and the popular car rally in the state park. You might also consider the park just for a stroll, and if so inclined, see how many of the trees and bushes you can identify.

The change of season in Thermopolis doesn’t mean a change in activity. School programs and sports switch to community events and celebrations, including a planned recognition for those downtown buildings which will turn 100 this year.

Even if you don’t attend too many events, take the time to check out a hiking trail you’ve always considered. Visit a business you haven’t been in for a while, or ever. As it’s also tourist season, you also might find yourself making some new friends or meeting some interesting people.

Those who want to plan ahead and take advantage of everything the town and the county have to offer this year, pick up a copy of the latest Thermopolis Hot Springs Visitor Guide, available at the newspaper office or any number of businesses. The calendar inside is a good guide to get you started, but also keep your eyes and ears open to make your own fun and memories this summer.
