Sentencing continued in Dumas case

A sentencing for Darren Dumas scheduled for Monday has been continued.

On April 19, Dumas was found guilty of strangulation of a household member and domestic battery. The charges state he beat Christy Dumas from Sept. 23-26, and impeded her breathing on Sept. 26.

During the trial, the jury heard testimony regarding the couple’s relationship, as well as the injuries Christy received, though two different scenarios were presented as to how things got to the point of physical injury.

The prosecution, represented by Jerry Williams and Marcia Bean, stated it was a cased of Darren not approving of some of Christy’s lifestyle choices and friends, and his assault on her was an effort to end the relationship. Bean further added there were other channels through which Darren could’ve ended their relationship, but he chose to assault her.

The defense, represented by Hope Mead, argued Christy did not want the relationship to end, and she sustained some of her injuries when crawling through a dog door after Darren had locked her out of their home. Mead also pointed out there were inconsistencies in Christy’s stories she told about the incident.

A new date has not been set for the sentencing.
